Along the famous ‘Garden Route’, about two hours east of Cape Town I spent time working alongside friends who are investing in various expressions of community development in the beach town of Mossel Bay.
Having been working with young offenders in a youth prison we partnered with these guys in a project to restore and renovate a run down house and clean up a garden in a deprived area the neighborhood.
Having invested in this project and having heard growing vision for how our friends are committed to bringing quality community development to the area, I responded by making an art piece in an abandoned property our friends are hoping to re-develop.
As I worked on the piece, my friend Carl helped local kids express themselves creatively through chalk drawings around the building. The piece speaks of fresh ways of viewing the neighborhood and new life being awakened in areas of brokenness.
